S.E.N.D BEFORE YOU SEND
Great communication starts with smart thinking. And email is no different. People love simple emails. Luckily, it’s easy to hop on the ‘get to the point’ train and become an email ninja. Just take a minute to S.E.N.D before you send.
S: Make it Short
Get to the point and get there quick. Everyone loves a short email:
Did I start with my main point and back it up along the way?
Have I repeated myself myself anywhere?
How else can I cut stuff out and keep it short?
E: Make it Easy
A great email should make someone’s life easy. And ideally, yours too:
What will be relevant or helpful to my reader?
What sort of headspace might they be in?
Will they be passing this on to anyone else?
N: Stick to the News
Make sure your email gets opened by sticking a summary in the subject line:
Does the subject line make the purpose of my email clear?
Did I keep it focused and separate the news from the noise?
Is it obvious what response I’m looking for?
D: Craft your Delivery
It’s not what you say, it’s how you say it. And how people feel when they read it:
Do I sound like I’m at the office, or the pub?
Am I relying on punctuation or emojis to get my tone across?
Could this be better said in person or over the phone?
And that’s how you write emails that are simple, smart and not all about you.
