UNPACKING A ROYAL FIT

Team Meghan? Team Crown? Whatever your take on the Royal tit for tat, it’s certainly got everyone talking. There’s no question that life sucked in team Sussex, but should they blame the Royals?

If you look past inflammatory accusations and ‘poor me’ moments, that Sussex chat with Oprah is a learning moment for all of us. It’s a textbook clash of values.

Two worlds. One Crown.

Human values are a critical part of who we are. It’s the stuff that matters most to us. Research shows that Basic Human Values cross cultures and generations. But they also cross each other. Different people have different values.

Harry and Meghan are young, progressive and open to change. They like stimulation, self-direction and a healthy side of hedonism. The Royal Family is an institution, they define traditionalism. So their key values are more likely to include conformity, tradition and security.

In a world like that, the woke don’t fit. And we’ve witnessed the proof of that. It’s no judgement on the passion and views of Harry and Meghan, it’s just two different worlds. Or, in this case, two different planets.

OUR TAKE:
You can change someone’s opinion but you can’t change their values.
Are you wasting your time ranting at the hand?

Even the Corgi’s called FIFO.

The Royal Family is not a normal family. They’re a fairytale and nightmare wrapped up in gossip rags. But they’re more than that. They’re living history. And history endures because they know their role and they play the game.

The challenge is, they’re also humans. And humans are fallible. But entry into one of the most privileged and famous families in the world, comes at a cost. Rights have responsibilities. And the biggest of those is to back the family. You can like it or lump it, that’s over to you. But the rules are FIFO: fit in or f**k off.

OUR TAKE:
Organisations have values too.
If you don’t like the fit….

Inside out. Or outside on it.

The biggest challenge of values is the feelings they fuel. Ever stamped your foot and said “that’s not right”? You’re totally right, it isn’t… for you. But could it be that someone else has a different way of thinking? Could they be right as well?

Meghan and Harry haven’t learned this yet. They’re absolutely right. And they’re fighting to change the world to their way of seeing it. The Queen on the other hand, is 91. She has seen it all before. Twice.

There’s no doubt that the Royal Family is a heavily conservative and old fashioned organisation. And there’s no doubt that progressives like Harry and Meghan will help to change minds and change the world. We once saw the potential of these things coming together. But turns out that was the fairy tale.

That said, it’s how you deal with it. You can stand in the tent pissing out. Or you can stand outside pissing on it. And the lobbing of Cancel Culture grenades to hurt the thing you wanted to change is the worst possible way to change it.

OUR TAKE:
People can change. Organisations too.
But nobody will change when they’re fighting.

Before you check in. Check values.

That’s our take on the titled vs the entitled. Some are young and passionate and others are old and traditional. But the biggest challenge here is the values.

So if you’re looking to start something new. Whether it’s a new job or a new human, it’s worth checking in on their values. If you’re not feeling what you find, it’s better to stay away.

That’s what I reckon, what do you think?
